The open section
On Saturday, November 9th, 2024, 44 players competed in the 4th Annual South Portland High School Chess Tournament. In a strong open section consisting of 13 players, NM Matthew Fishbein and William Ravn tied for first with 3.5/4, closely followed by former MECA President Michael Dudley on 3/4. In the U1400, 12 players battled it out for supremacy with Daniel Lawson emerging victorious with a perfect 4/4 score, followed by a 3-way tie for 2nd on 3/4 between Loki Drisko, Arkan Das, and Scott Miele. In the largest section of the tournament, the U800, boasting 19 players, 2 players tied for first on perfect 4/4 scores, Oscar Karolkowski and Snowy Conford. Behind them in a 4-way tie for 3rd place on 3/4 were Holton Kang, Noah Kay, Logan Levesque, and Brayden Cabrera Blanchard. Congratulations to all the players who competed and a big thanks to David Cimato for directing the tournament and to Gil Doughty and South Portland High School for organizing and hosting the event!
